In order to better conquer the complex and exciting works of Kara Walker, we decided as a group to divide her works into four main categories so that we each could look in depth at her major themes of sexuality, racism, historical truths and fictions, and emotional struggles. With each of us taking one of her major themes, we were better able to specialize in and analyze her work in great detail. We all found in the beginning that each of our individual research lead us to the same paintings. So we decided as a group to include her two most famous works, Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred b'tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart, 1994, and Slavery! Slavery! Presenting a GRAND and LIFELIKE Panoramic Journey into Picturesque Southern Slavery or “Life at ‘Ol’ Virginny’s Hole’ (sketches from Plantation Life)” See the Peculiar Institution as never before! All cut from black paper by the able hand of Kara Elizabeth Walker, an Emancipated Negress and leader in her Cause, 1997. Then we analyzed and dissected each of Kara Walker's works, first looking at the individual cut-outs and figures, then evaluating the roles each figure plays within the smaller scenes, and then finally looking at the work as a whole installation and seeing how the scenes came together to illustrate the underlying themes.
